City of Lamphun
Historic provincial capital (25000 residents) founded in the 8th century with a glamorous past. Here the Hariphunchai empire, the oldest high culture of northern Thailand, was founded. Lamphun was an independent kingdom until it was conquered by Lanna-Thai in 1281.
Reconstructed parts of the city wall and a city moat surround the idyllic old town. Despite it vicinity to Chiang Mai you can experience the leisurely life of the local people. Lamphun is known and admired thailand wide for its 'slow life' approach and you can even see many rickshaws in the streets. Paddy fields and fruit orchards surround the city. One of the most important and most beautiful temple complex is located in the old city center – What Phrahathat Hariphunchai.
